Find Federal Release Records

To find someone released from Federal Bureau of Prisons custody after a Shasta County or northern California federal case, use federal records instead of the Shasta County Jail roster. Federal release lookup is a separate path from county jail release and state CDCR discharge. The BOP locator can show federal custody information for people incarcerated from 1982 forward, while U.S. Marshals Service custody may explain federal pretrial detention or transport before BOP designation. A complete search may also need federal court records and any local jail transfer note.

Federal Releases in Shasta Cases

A federal release is not confirmed through Shasta County Jail or CDCR. The Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator is the main public search for sentenced federal inmates, and BOP's records page states that its inmate records cover federal inmates released after 1982. A Shasta County local jail record may show a federal hold or transfer, but that local record only explains the county-custody event. It does not prove final release from federal custody.

Federal defendants can also be managed by the U.S. Marshals Service before BOP designation. USMS describes its prisoner role as custody and transportation of federal prisoners from federal arrest through acquittal or incarceration. That means a person may move from a local facility or USMS hold to BOP, or may be released through federal court action before a BOP prison term begins.

Use BOP Federal Locator

The BOP locator should be used only for federal inmates. A result may show a release date or indicate that the person is not in BOP custody. That phrase must be read carefully. It means BOP custody is not current; it does not prove the person has no federal supervision, no state case, no local hold, no immigration custody, or no court obligation.

  1. Open the BOP inmate locator.
  2. Search by BOP register number if known, or by legal name and identifying details.
  3. Compare age, name spelling, and release date fields to the federal court case.
  4. Use BOP's about federal inmate records page for coverage limits and post-1982 release records.
  5. Return to the Shasta jail release record only to confirm whether the person left county custody for federal custody.
Federal caution: Not in BOP custody is not the same as cleared of every court, custody, or supervision issue.

Federal BOP Release Source

The public federal lookup begins with the BOP inmate locator.

Use the locator result as a federal custody lead. Pair it with BOP records, federal court records, and any Shasta County Jail transfer note when the person first appeared in local custody.

USMS Custody Before BOP

USMS custody matters because not every federal person is immediately in a BOP prison. A federal defendant may be arrested, transported, held for court, housed under contract, acquitted, released by court order, or sentenced and later designated to BOP. If Shasta County Jail records show a federal hold or transfer, the local release record should be read as the county exit point, not as a final federal discharge.

For practical verification, compare the Shasta jail record with federal court case activity. The county record may answer when the person left county custody and whether a federal agency received the person. The federal court and BOP path answer what happened after that transfer.

Shasta Jail vs Federal Release

County and federal release records answer different events. A Shasta County Jail release record can show release to the community, bail, time served, court order, or transfer to a receiving agency. A federal BOP record can show a federal inmate's prison custody and release date from BOP custody. CDCR CIRIS covers state prison, not federal custody. Keeping the systems separate prevents a common error: treating a local jail disappearance as proof of final federal release.

SystemUse It For
Shasta County JailLocal booking, release, transfer, and time and manner of release.
Federal court / USMSFederal pretrial, transport, custody orders, and court disposition.
BOPSentenced federal prison custody and federal release date after 1982.

Federal Release Record Fields

Useful federal release details include the BOP register number, full legal name, age, facility, release date, and whether the person is listed as released or not in BOP custody. For a Shasta-linked case, the local jail release record may add the booking number, federal hold, receiving agency, transfer date, and court case identifiers. Those fields should be reconciled rather than merged into one record.

When BOP does not show a person, check spelling, aliases, pre-1982 limits, whether the case was federal at all, whether the person was in USMS pretrial custody only, and whether the person entered state or local custody instead. For ordinary Shasta County Jail release questions, return to Shasta County Jail, VINE, court records, and the county public-records request path.

Federal Registry Boundaries

The DOJ locator page also points users toward federal inmates and sex-offender resources, and California has a separate Megan's Law registry for qualifying registrants. Those tools are not general released-inmate lists. A registry can show a statutory registration category after release, but it does not confirm every federal release, county jail release, or sentence discharge.

Note: Use BOP for federal custody, not as a Shasta County recent-release feed.

BOP Release Date Limits

BOP release-date information should be treated as federal custody information, not as a universal person-status report. A release date in the locator can answer when BOP custody ended for a federal inmate. It does not answer whether the person has a local Shasta case, state case, supervision term, immigration matter, or court date. BOP also notes that federal release dates may change because of sentence review and recalculation issues.

For a Shasta-linked federal case, compare the BOP result with the federal docket and any county booking record. If the person was first held in Shasta County Jail on a federal hold, the county release record may show a transfer to federal custody. If BOP later shows a release date, that is a later federal event. The two dates can both be correct because they answer different custody layers.

DateWhat It Can Mean
Shasta jail release dateLocal custody ended, often by release, court order, or transfer.
USMS custody dateFederal pretrial, transport, or court custody event.
BOP release dateFederal sentenced-prison custody ended after BOP commitment.
Court disposition dateFederal case action, sentence, dismissal, or later order.

Request Federal Release Records

When the locator does not answer the question, build the request around the custody layer. For BOP, identify the federal inmate by register number, legal name, and approximate custody dates when possible. For Shasta County, request the county booking/release or transfer record through the county process. For court outcomes, use the federal court record rather than asking the county to explain a federal sentence.

Do not mix the systems into one broad request. A narrower request is easier to route and easier to verify. If the person moved from Shasta County Jail to federal custody, ask the county for the local release or transfer event and use federal sources for what happened after the transfer. If the person was never in BOP custody, USMS or court records may be the better federal path.

Shasta Federal Lookup Examples

A Shasta jail record that says transfer to federal custody should lead to federal court, USMS context, and BOP only if the person was sentenced to federal prison. A BOP result that says released should lead back to the federal docket if the question is why the person was released or what court action preceded the release. A no-result in BOP may mean the person was never a sentenced BOP inmate, not that no federal case existed.

For a person who moved from local jail to CDCR instead, use the state page. For a person who was released locally and placed on probation or mandatory supervision, use Shasta County Probation and the court case. The federal page is strongest when the record actually points to federal criminal custody or federal sentenced-prison history.

The same person can have more than one custody layer over time. A Shasta arrest can be local, a later federal case can be separate, and an immigration question can be another federal overlay. Match records by date, case number, agency, and custody event before assuming that one locator explains the whole history.

If the local record is the only confirmed source, keep the conclusion local. If BOP is the only confirmed source, keep the conclusion federal. A strong federal release lookup states what each agency proves and leaves unresolved layers open until the matching court or custody record is checked.
